what is a lead magnet?


As you may already know, the number one secret to success for an online business is creating a list of people who are interested in your service or product. Once you create a list of interested prospects, you can contact them with information, promotions, or offers. This puts you in the driver's seat, instead of waiting passively for people to stumble upon your page or post.

Of course, a lead magnet can be delivered via just about any medium you choose; a PDF guide, an ebook, a podcast, a webinar, an email or newsletter series, a video, or anything else you can dream up. 

The idea of a lead magnet is to show your potential future customer that you know what you're talking about, and that you have something valuable to offer them. It's a pre-sales tool that is used to show your knowledge, your personality, or your style; in hopes that they'll think, "This person understands me! I want (whatever it is that you're offering)."

When done correctly, a lead magnet convinces your potential future customer that you are offering the EXACT solution they are looking for. Once you achieve that, they will have no problem signing up for or buying whatever you're offering.

I wrote and designed this 18-page PDF "guide" as a lead magnet and pre-sales piece for a high-end online video course, which cost between $297 and $497 (the course went through a few evolutions). In order to convince someone that my course was worth that kind of investment, I really had to convince them not only that I am a professional and know what I'm talking about, but also that the course is worth it. This lead magnet increased conversions by roughly 70%.
